The Little Things
March 10, 2015

Last weekend I woke up to snow falling heavily, with maybe 7-8 inches already on the ground! After doing a bit of pilates to stretch myself out (I woke up nice and stiff), I headed outside for a beautiful walk! I’ve realized for me, learning to like winter means engaging with it and enjoying the various aspects of it. For me, walking outside is part of engaging with winter instead of treating it as my enemy.

I threw on my coat and a pair of boots and walked outside, only to sink in so deep that even my boots were completely covered:

I kept going, undeterred. I walked without any music or podcasts, which is something that I rarely do. Snow falling peacefully, without wind, is beautiful and deeply quiet, and I absolutely love it! It’s grounding and calming, and reminds me of all sorts of fantastic memories as a kid. Walking along, I kept looking up into the sky, and I felt like I had stepped into a beautiful snow globe.

ย I ended up walking just over a mile before deciding to clean off my car.ย The snow was already up to the half way point on my wheel, and I knew that they were still predicting hours of snow (one thing I learned while living in Minnesota is that, in storms, you go out and shovel and clean off your car along the way so that you don’t have the daunting task of doing it all at once).

I spent the rest of the day (it snowed on and off ALL day) wandering past the windows, taking a few moments to take a few deep, cleansing breaths and while enjoying the gently falling snow. I also enjoyed some homemade hot chocolate!

When I woke up, I knew I had a choice. I could complain about a big snow storm in March, or I could choose to slow down and enjoy the day… and enjoy it I did! It all goes back to owning our reactions. I’ve also realized that a beautiful snow fall can actually be a “little thing” in life!

Now it’s your turn to share! What’s one of your favorite things to do when it snows?

Love this! Gotta keep a positive mind set. At the end of the HOT HOT summer we will likely have I know we’ll all be wanting some snowy/colder weather. So might as well appreciate it while we can. Also gives us an excuse to burn those amazing winter candles just a little bit longer, right?

  2. I hate the snow, but my sister sent me tons of pictures of my nephew playing in the snow in Indy and I sure loved those.
