The Little Things
August 23, 2012

Despite the fact that most of my energy has been focused on dealing with my friend’s death and upcoming funeral, I still need to be thinking a bit about my triathlon. Just like the days leading up to my half marathon, I am working hard to squash that little voice that says I can’t do this. Nevertheless, there is a lot of unknown involved in this race, as I’ve never even seen a triathlon before. Everything feels so foreign, so new, so unknown. I’m nervous. Excited, absolutely, but still nervous as well.

That being said, here are some of the things I’ve been thinking about and worried about for each leg.

Obviously the timing of everything with this race is no good, and I’m not going into this triathlon very prepared. I’m still excited… and nervous! Right now I’m focusing on foam rolling, continuing to walk every day to keep my legs loose, icing my foot, and preparing for the funeral. And, of course, confronting the voice in my head.

Now it’s your turn to share! Any thoughts or tips on triathlons in general?

  1. I just finished my first mini-triathlon and I have to say that my only goals were to finish it and to learn how to get through transitions. I had no high hopes for my first one, but thought about it completely as a learning experience so that I can do a great job in October at my next one. One thing I also noticed was that all of my fears, which were similar to yours, disappeared once the adrenaline started flowing. Good luck to you. 🙂

I’m hoping this tri will be a great learning experience for me as well! Like you, I hope that once I get to the race on Sunday I’ll just be excited. Congrats on finishing your first tri!

From what I’ve heard, the main point to remember is to put on your helmet before getting on your bike. There’s a triathalon near(ish) to me, and if you even touch your bike without having your helmet on, you get disqualified. I’m sure it depends on where your triathalon is, but best to make sure!
    Good luck!

  3. I think I already sent you the link to Healthy Tipping Point’s triathalon posts (if not google it, because she has a ton of tips)… that’s really my only advice for them since I don’t have any experience 🙂 I do know that I’ve heard some people put balloons at their transition station to make it stand out! You CAN do it girl!!!

Yes- you sent me the link before and I’ve read and re-read them multiple times, so thank you! I appreciate it and they’ve been very helpful!

  5. Try putting a brightly/distintive coloured towel down on the floor by your bike – helps to find your spot easily after swim and run
