The Little Things
March 31, 2015

One of the things that makes Barre Class what it is is the music. The music is perfectly timed with the exercises, and beats are specifically chosen to match the movements at that time. Making a playlist for barre isn’t as simple as just throwing up 15 songs that sound great. It’s about choosing songs I enjoy, along with songs that meet the criteria above.

So yes, creating playlists for barre definitely takes a bit of time, but I usually enjoy it. I also try to do at least an abbreviated class with each playlist before I use it in class, just to make sure that everything works right.

That being said, here is one of my latest barre playlists:

Barre Playlist

Here’s how the song breakdowns work:

Warmup

Pilates Section

Planks Section

Cadio Section

Barre Section

Cool Down

This comes out as 13 songs at 53 total minutes, giving the class time to get set up (we usually end up starting 2-3 minutes late because of that), as well as a few minutes at the end to ask questions and roll up their mats.

If you’re interested in other barre/workout playlists, here you go:

Now it’s your tun to share! What are your favorite songs to work out to right now? Do you have a throwback song that you find inspirational?

When I sat down to read “Abundance of Katherines” I was feeling fairly excited, as I really love John Green (the author, who also wrote The Fault In Our Stars, Paper Towns, and Looking For Alaska, all of which I’ve read). I’ve LOVED this other books, so I had high hopes for this book as well. Seeing some of the reviews on good reads gave me a little concern, but I was excited nonetheless.

An Abundance of Katherines Review

The story is about Colin, a highschooler who has a “thing” for girls named Katherine. Colin can’t seem to keep the Katherine’s he has dated, and has been dumped by 19 different Katherines. He sets off with his best friend on a road trip, as part of his journey to prove the “Theorem of Underlying Katherine Predictability”, which he hopes will help predict the future of relationships.

Honestly, I didn’t really like this book at all. If it wasn’t a John Green book, I probably wouldn’t have finished the book. That being said, I probably would’ve read the book if I’d known how much I would dislike it, simply because of the author. The book felt poorly overall to me, although there were some interesting parts. Colin anagrams things constantly in the book, and I got pretty frustrated with it. I gave “Abundance of Katherines” a 2 on goodreads, which I felt sad about. I REALLY wanted to like this book, but I just didn’t.

Happy Friday! This week’s nail polish color is Nirvana by Sinful Colors. I topped it with a very light coat of “You Pink Too Much” by OPI (last time I did this color combination I did a much thicker layer).

Nirvana Sinful Colors Nail PolishI pretty much love everything about this combination of colors.

Throwback Post: Being Attracted To Health

Here are some random facts for the week:

1. Sometimes I wake up a little earlier just so I can lay on my foam roller and roll out my back in the morning while watching the news. I find it to be really relaxing.

2. I recently have started bringing in all my fruit for lunches on Monday and piling it on my desk. A co-worker started laughing at me when she walked by and saw 12 clementines sitting there…

3. Over the last week and a half, I read my first book by Jojo Moyes (Me Before You), which I really enjoyed. I love finding authors who I enjoy, and I’ve already added multiple other books of hers to my good reads account. Speaking of that- do you have a good reads account? If you’re a reader at all and don’t have an account- get one quickly! I love it 🙂

4. I’m not sure if I’ve ever said this before- but I have sleep glasses. I have glasses (they are from high school so I wouldn’t wear them out anymore) that I put on in the evenings so I can lay around and watch TV without bending my “real” glasses. I even bring my sleep glasses with me when I travel…

Now it’s your turn to share! Tell me one random fact from your week? Who’s one of your favorite authors?

Happy Thursday! The last 7 days have been packed full of all sorts of activities, with a few moments here and there to catch my breath and enjoy what’s going on around me. Here’s what I’m thankful for today:

I’m thankful for dish soap.  I’m not sure I’ve really ever thought to be thankful for this until I sat down this week to type this list, and I’m not sure exactly why I thought of it! However, I am so thankful for dish soap and how easy it makes it to have clean dishes!

I’m thankful for tulips. I really love my little pot of tulips that I got two weeks ago! They’re making my living room smell delicious and they bring a smile to my face every time I walk through my door!

I’m thankful that I have a bath tub. I am so glad I don’t just have a standing shower. I love the luxury that’s provided in taking long baths at the end of the day! Plus- I can take ice baths as well!

I’m thankful for Friends. The TV show I mean. Friends is one of my all time favorite shows and makes me laugh pretty hard almost every time I watch it. For some reason I recently decided to pull out a season on DVD, and now I just have it going in the room as I do dishes, clean, or blog. I love that show 🙂

I’m thankful for time with friends. While I love the TV show Friends, I also love my real friends 🙂 On Saturday Melissa, Meg, and I went out for Mexican food and froyo and got to spend some quality time together. We haven’t all been together since Melissa’s birthday at the beginning of December, so it was well past time to get together!

Now it’s your turn to share! What are you feeling thankful for today? What’s one of your favorite TV shows?

Hey all! My name is Erin Toews (pronounced “Taves”). I blog over at Toews Adventure, where my husband Kameron and I write about our travels, fun activities, and inspirations. Once our work visas get processed, we are headed to Zimbabwe for a year long mission trip. I will be a nurse at a mission hospital, and Kam will use his videography skills to make documentaries. But while we wait, we are living & hiking in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Hiking is one “little thing” I do to stay healthy physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Physical health is the most obvious benefit I get from hiking. My heart rate increases. Different muscles are used than regular walking.  I have tried running several times in my life, but I only last a couple days before giving up. With hiking, I keep going, trying different trails, and love the view at the end. Great cardio. Great muscle-toning. Great workout.
Emotional health is a major reason way I hike. Maybe even more than for the physical benefits. The fresh air clears my mind. It boosts my mood. Makes me feel alive. Although I have extrovert tendencies, I love my alone time. I get energized by getting quality “me” time. And what better place than in the middle of nowhere with no one else around. #perfection
Spiritual health is my favorite benefit of hiking. While making my way up the trails, I pray. Hiking is the ultimate prayer walk. I feel the Holy Spirit talking directly to my soul when I’m out there.  There are many verses about walking with the Lord including:
Colossians 1:10“so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God “
Ephesians 4:1“Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called.”
and
Psalm 86:11“Teach me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name.”
Hiking is my favorite.
Some of my favorite places to hike are: 1) Harney Peak, 2) Romania, and 3) the Badlands.

Now it’s your turn. Where do you like to hike?

Paper Towns- an interesting term, isn’t it? I actually hadn’t heard the term “paper town” before I read this book, so I won’t spoil it for those of you who don’t know! Paper Towns is a book by John Green, who wrote The Fault In Our Stars and Looking For Alaskaso I assumed that I would like it!

Paper Towns Review

The story is about a group of high schoolers faced with a frightening situation (I don’t want to say what so I don’t ruin it!) that they must figure out. The story follows their progress as they attempt to figure out and cope with what has happened. In some ways, the main grouping of characters felt very similar to those in Looking For Alaska, which some people have found frustrating. I loved it though! Green’s writing is spectacular, and I love how he structures his stories. He weaves incredible thoughts and themes throughout his book, which I definitely appreciate. Here’s a quote that stood out to me:

“Maybe its like you said before, all of us being cracked open. Like each of us starts out as a watertight vessel. And then things happen – these people leave us, or don’t love us, or don’t get us, or we don’t get them, and we lose and fail and hurt one another. And the vessel starts to crack in places. And I mean, yeah once the vessel cracks open, the end becomes inevitable. Once it starts to rain inside the Osprey, it will never be remodeled. But there is all this time between when the cracks start to open up and when we finally fall apart. And its only that time that we see one another, because we see out of ourselves through our cracks and into others through theirs. When did we see each other face to face? Not until you saw into my cracks and I saw into yours. Before that we were just looking at ideas of each other, like looking at your window shade, but never seeing inside. But once the vessel cracks, the light can get in. The light can get out.”
Paper Towns was a quick read, and held my attention from start to finish. This book is definitely worth your time- especially if you enjoy John Green’s other books! Another perk to reading it- Paper Towns is being made into a movie, and is slated to be out in June of 2015! So, reading it now will get you ready for the summer!
Now it’s your turn to share! Tell me one great book that you’ve read recently? If you’ve read multiple John Green books, which one is your favorite?

March 23, 2015

This past Saturday I set out for my long training run of 7ish miles with high expectations. You see, 7 milers tend to be some of my favorite runs; they seem to be my “sweet distance”. Let me rewind for a minute.

Friday night I ended up staying up a little later than I wanted to watching Friends. I was nearing the end of season 10, so I decided to stay up and watch the finale, which I hadn’t seen in a year or two. I tear up or straight up cry every time- it’s so well done! I ended up getting much less sleep than I had wanted to, so getting up to run felt a bit difficult.

I had a small breakfast and read a bit of “Me Before You” while snuggled up on my couch. Maybe that was a bad move, because I REALLY didn’t want to go out on my run. Honestly, the only thing that helped motivate me was knowing the mileage I had on my schedule.

The temperature was about 38 degrees when I headed out, which was pretty fantastic (although for my first few walk breaks I put my hands under my arms to try to keep them a bit warmer. The first two miles I struggled to get myself under 12 minutes per mile. My legs felt heavy and tough to turn over- I don’t know why, except that I’ve increased my walking and biking mileage a bit. Then I hit a solid groove. Unlike last week’s run, I didn’t feel like I needed to count down every three minute run period- the time was flying by.

IMG_8366

ALL the pink.

I took a few shot bloks around mile 4 (cran razz, one of my favorites!) along with some water and then went on my way. The sun was shining, and I had podcasts going as I took in the scenery. It was a beautiful day for a run, and the time honestly flew by.

I was able to negative split the run, and my last few miles clocked in under 12 minutes per mile, which I was happy about. I think it just took me a little time to loosen up. I noticed on Saturday that I’ve been pretty tense during runs the past two months because I’m waiting for an injury to flare up. My legs (shins/posterior tibial tendinitis) have felt a little off since the end of September (I took most of October off running, had a half marathon on November 1st where I set an awesome new PR, ran a bit more in October, and then only ran a few miles each month in December and February). The last two runs especially I’ve been waiting to land on my foot and have pain shoot my the inside of my leg… and it hasn’t. I’m thankful for that, but I noticed on this weekend’s run that this fear has taken away some of my enjoyment of training.

It’s also been difficult to transition back to training alone. I met Melissa last April during the Carmel Half Marathon, and except for a handful of runs, I ran almost every mile the rest of 2014 (including most of my races) and the beginning of 2015 with her. The last few long runs I’ve once again done alone (due to all sorts of scheduling things that keep getting in the way), and that’s been different. It’s not a bad thing, but I’ve noticed that it changes the mental game of runs when I’m alone.

I ran 7.25 beautiful miles on Saturday. The weather was great and the run felt, mostly, great as well. 2015 has brought a different schedule and changes in my training, and it’s taken me a bit of time to adjust to that, but it finally feels like I’m settling into training once again.

Happy Friday! This week I chose the closest color I had to green for St. Patrick’s Day: “Rise and Shine” by Sinful Colors (it’s $2 at many local grocery stores and it holds up SO well!). I threw a little “You Pink Too Much” by OPI on top, but made sure to put it on sparingly, trying to avoid the bigger chunks of glitter:

Sinful Colors "Rise and Shine" nail polish

I really love the color! It’s creamy and smooth, and you can’t beat the price. The Sinful Colors I have don’t seem to chip. I’ve had this polish on since Sunday and there aren’t any chips- amazing!

Throwback Post: Respecting the No! (this is hugely hugely important, and something that most people struggle with at some point)

Here are some random facts for the week:

1. I had to throw away my Valentine’s Day Flowers last weekend (yes- they lasted for SO long), and was feeling a bit sad with the color of flowers in my place. When I saw these tulips on sale at the grocery store, I scooped them up. I’m having a love affair with tulips this year…

tulips

2. Soccer brother is officially a professional soccer player now! He officially signed his contract this week (he moved overseas just over two weeks ago), and I’m SO so excited for him! It’s been such a joy in life to watch him go from “micro soccer” as a 3 and 4 year old all the way through playing in Nationals in college, and now being a pro! He’s worked so hard, and this is proof that you can make your dreams come true (even when those dreams start before kindergarten :D).

3. I had a really nasty nightmare earlier this week- one of those nightmares that feels real and is hard to shake off. 50 minutes later when I went to leave for work, I got really stressed to leave the house. SO ridiculous since it was rooted in something that wasn’t even real. I was rewarded with an amazing sunrise to enjoy on my way to work, which helped immensely!

4. Have you watched ABC’s “Repeat After Me” yet? It just started a few weeks ago, and I’m absolutely loving it! If you haven’t seen it yet, head to ABC’s website to check it out 🙂

5. I think my ultimate comfort food is oatmeal. I LOVE oatmeal and eat it pretty often. When I’m nervous, not feeling well, or busy, it’s a go to food for me. I even bring a bag of it when I travel… “just in case” (after I got food poisoning in Spain in 2012 and that’s all that sounded good, I’ve brought it with me most places). To me, it works for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, or dessert. YUM!

Now it’s your turn to share! What’s one of your “go to” comfort foods? Do you ever have nightmares that are tough to shake off?

March 19, 2015

Happy Thursday! It’s starting to feel more like spring, which is such a very happy thing 🙂 Here’s what I’m thankful for today:

I’m thankful for “The Stick”. The stick is one of the greatest inventions for people who are physically active. I love (and sort of hate) rolling out my tight quads, IT bands, and calf muscles are long runs and bike rides. I also love that it’s small enough to easily throw in a suitcase when I travel!

I’m thankful for warmer weather! This weekend and start of the week, it was in the upper 50s-low 70s, and my heart felt wonderfully full and happy. Yes, I’m learning to like winter, but warmer weather is my first love, and I’m SO happy that we’re getting some warm days thrown in between cooler days now.

I’m thankful for the sound of chirping birds. I’m absolutely loving hearing birds chirp while out on walks and while sitting in my office at work. It’s so cheerful sounding and brings a smile to my face every time I hear it.

I’m thankful for buds on the trees. SPRING IS ON ITS WAY! I love seeing buds show up on the trees, and I’m thankful for these little signs that new life is coming once again.

I’m thankful for the kindle! I love being able to read in bed with all the lights off, and I really loving being able to download books straight from the library. While I do love paper books, it’s so easy and convenient to do it all from my living room (especially because I’m working such crazy hours that don’t often line up with the library being open). What a nifty little invention 🙂

Now it’s your turn to share! What are you thankful for today? What signs of spring are you seeing right now?
